Accompanying the letter of invitation will be a processing packet that includes instructions for completing and/or providing the following documentation from physicians of the applicant’s choice, at the applicant’s expense:
The SPMO reviews the medical documentation obtained from the applicant’s physicians and uses it to conduct a cursory medical evaluation. The standards listed in this section must be met, but do not represent an all-inclusive list of the requirements.
HEARING – Applicants must be able to pass an audiometer screening conducted by an Audiologist. Standards for each ear, without the use of any type of aid, are as follows:
DENTAL – Evidence of healthy gums and a full set of teeth, or satisfactory replacements, as certified by a dentist.

VISION – As certified by an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist, with all listed standards being met, with no exceptions:
Vision Surgery Information/Policy: All Cadets must participate in an OC spray training scenario during the 13th week of training. The OC spray manufacturer recommends that we wait a minimum of six months from the date of corrective eye surgery to use the spray on Cadets. Therefore, your date of surgery must be at least 6 months prior to the 13th week of training. (For example, a Cadet Class that begins on June 2, 2018 will have the OC spray training scenario during the week of August 25, 2018. Only applicants who had surgery prior to February 24, 2018 will be approved by the State Police Medical Officer for appointment.) The Department acknowledges that an applicant’s surgeon may approve an applicant for OC spray less than six months from the date of surgery; however, our policy stands as stated above.
*There are no exceptions or waivers to this policy, even with a surgeon’s approval.
HAIRSTYLE POLICY
TATTOO/REPLICA/EAR PLUG POLICY [REVISED 03/04/20] – The following policy shall apply to those individuals as a condition of employment with the Pennsylvania State Police and will remain as a condition of employment throughout their career.
Applicants, upon appointment, shall have no tattoos or brandings which would be visible to the public when wearing the Department-issued long-sleeved uniform shirt. Visible areas include the hands, neck and facial areas. Tattoos are not allowed to be visible below the wrist line or above the neckline at any time. Ear plugs shall be removed with the ear repaired upon appointment. Appointment is conditioned upon compliance with this policy.
A review by the training staff shall take place on the first day of appointment. Any applicant who, upon appointment, has visible tattoos/brandings when wearing the Department-issued long-sleeved uniform shirt, or whose ear lobes remain altered from the removal of ear plugs, shall be immediately released from the training site. Any applicant released from training for noncompliance with this policy will not be officially appointed and, therefore, will not be considered to have been employed by the Pennsylvania State Police.
Any applicant released from training for noncompliance with this policy will be provided with a maximum eighteen-month period in which to have the tattoo removed or ear repaired. Applicants will then be offered appointment to the next available Cadet class.
Should the tattoo remain visible, or the ear not be repaired, the applicant will be disqualified and, again, will not have been considered to have been employed by the Pennsylvania State Police. In order to receive consideration for employment in the future, the applicant must reapply to participate in the qualifying examination process.
*There are no exceptions or waivers to this policy. Tattoo coverings and/or make-up to cover tattoos are not permissible.
